Managing Stormwater Runoff
Rainfall and snowmelt create stormwater runoff, and for homeowners, managing stormwater runoff is a major concern. On surfaces where it can’t melt into the ground – such as paved roads, parking lots, rooftops, industrial sites, and more, the water flows over the ground surface until it ends up in a storm drain and ultimately into waterways including lakes, streams, and rivers.
As that stormwater passes over surfaces, it picks up sediments, debris, and other harmful materials which harmfully impacts the environment and ecosystems. To counteract this, towns and cities across the country are increasingly enforcing and strengthening National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) permits.
